From the vibrant underground scene of Quezon Province, emerges a Nu Metal band that turns frustration into fire. Meet Major! Malfunction — a group that found power in chaos and humor in failure. Their story began not with a perfect jam session, but with constant breakdowns, literally.
The Name Born from a Breakdown
When asked how they came up with their band name, vocalist Dean laughed as he recalled their early struggles.
“Lagi kaming nagkaka-major malfunction — sira lagi ang gamit sa practice o gig.”
“We always had a major malfunction — our gear kept breaking during rehearsals or gigs.”
The phrase, borrowed from the 1987 Stanley Kubrick film Full Metal Jacket, stuck with them.
“Naging inside joke na namin ‘yon,” Dean added. “Pero habang tumatagal, narealize namin na bagay siya sa amin — kahit anong sira, tuloy lang.”
“It became our inside joke, but eventually we realized it fits us perfectly — no matter what breaks, we keep going.”
That resilience — to laugh at setbacks and keep pushing forward — became the essence of Major! Malfunction.
Reuniting After the Silence
Dean and Don have been making music together since 2008 under a band called Pritong Ice Cream. But like many artists, the pandemic brought everything to a halt.
“Matagal kaming tumigil nung pandemic, pero nung 2022, nagpasya kaming bumalik at buuin ulit ang banda,” Dean shared.
“We stopped for a long time during the pandemic, but in 2022, we decided to come back and rebuild the band.”
Together with Jeero (Drums), Patrick (Guitars), Bryan (Guitars), and Kevin (Synth), they formed a six-member powerhouse ready to shake up the local scene.
Sound and Influence
“Ang tunog namin ay heavily influenced ng RATM, Fever 333, at Linkin Park,” Dean explained.
“Our sound is heavily influenced by RATM, Fever 333, and Linkin Park.”
Their style blends aggression, rhythm, and emotion — a raw mix of political energy and personal defiance that mirrors the frustrations of today’s youth.
Revolution: A Song for the Broken System
Their first song, aptly titled “Revolution,” is a manifesto more than a debut.
“Tungkol ito sa bulok na sistema at kung paano natin kailangang lumaban para sa kinabukasan,”Dean said.
“It’s about the broken system and how we must fight for our future.”
Though unreleased, the track already defines the band’s identity — a wake-up call wrapped in distortion and defiance.
Inside the Creative Process
“Si Patrick gumagawa ng demos, tapos ako nagsusulat ng lyrics,” Dean shared.
“Patrick creates the demos, then I write the lyrics.”
“Bawat isa may ambag — sa tunog, sa ideya, pati sa artwork,” he added.
“Everyone contributes — from the sound, to the ideas, even the artwork.”
Their teamwork shows that Major! Malfunction is more than just a band — it’s a creative brotherhood built on collaboration and trust.
The Struggles That Shaped Them
The road hasn’t been smooth.
“Nawala yung original naming gitarista, tapos sunod-sunod na ang palit,” Dean admitted.
“We lost our original guitarist, then members kept changing after that.”
Still, every challenge strengthened their bond.
“Kahit ilang beses kaming magka-major malfunction, babangon pa rin kami,” Dean said with a grin.
“No matter how many major malfunctions we face, we’ll always rise again.”
Unforgettable Moments
One of their proudest moments was opening for Valley of Chrome, a legendary name in the local metal scene.
“Hindi namin makakalimutan ‘yon,” Dean smiled. “Ibang level ‘yung energy — parang validation na tama ang ginagawa namin.”
“We’ll never forget that. The energy was on another level — it felt like validation that we’re on the right track.”
And their biggest achievement so far?
“Yung matapos namin ang unang kanta namin — ‘Revolution’. Simula pa lang ito,” Dean said.
“Finishing our first song, ‘Revolution.’ This is just the beginning.”
The Road Ahead
While balancing work and family, the members remain focused on the music.
“Trabaho para sa pamilya sa araw, tugtugan sa gabi,” Dean laughed.
“Work for the family by day, play music by night.”
Looking ahead, their goal is clear.
“Sa loob ng limang taon, sana may full album na kami,” Dean said.
“Within five years, we hope to have a full album.”
And if dreams align?
“Gustong-gusto naming makipag-collab sa Linkin Park,” Dean admitted.
“We’d love to collaborate with Linkin Park.”
A Message from Major! Malfunction
Though they humbly claim they don’t have “fans” yet, their presence in the scene hasn’t gone unnoticed.
“Sabi nila maganda daw tunog namin live,” Dean said.
“People told us we sound great live.”
Their message is simple but powerful:
“Kahit gaano kabasag ang sistema, kaya nating lumaban,” Dean declared.
“No matter how broken the system is, we can still fight back.”
Major! Malfunction isn’t just making noise — they’re building a movement. From the heart of Quezon Province, their music echoes a spirit that refuses to be silenced.
“Basta’t may tugtugan, may pag-asa.”
“As long as there’s music, there’s hope.”
